Frederick took a large gulp of ice water and let out a long sigh of relief. "Finally, it's over."
I chuckled lightly. "It's not over yet. The real show is just about to begin."
Noticing Hansen making exaggerated winks and gestures, Frederick asked, "What's going on? Is there another event?"
Hansen eagerly recounted the bet between Donna and me.
Frederick frowned and said, "This is ridiculous. How could a bet like this even happen at a party?"
He turned to me and, in a low voice, he said, "Ms. York, please don't let this upset you. I'll talk to Donna. She's just competitive, always trying to prove herself—no matter the time or place."
As he spoke, he moved as if to go and pull Donna off the stage.
I stopped him. "It's okay. If she thinks I'm not good enough, I just have to make her think otherwise."
