Once we got in the car, I was still thinking about that question. I hadn't noticed how Logan's expression was growing darker by the second.
He turned to me with his eyes full of quiet intensity. "Are you thinking about Elijah?"
I snapped out of it, meeting his gaze. Feeling guilty, I replied, "I'm not thinking about him. I just find it strange. Where could he have gone?"
As soon as I said that, I noticed his expression darkening even more. Crap, I said the wrong thing. I quickly added, "Don't you think it's odd that he just disappeared?"
His voice was low and tinged with displeasure. "It's not strange. What's strange is the way you're acting now."
Oh, he was really mad.
I could only lean closer to him, trying to smile apologetically. "I don't miss him. I just… I just…"
He looked at me with a gaze that felt like that of a husband questioning an unfaithful wife.
I couldn't continue. The pressure was too much, and all the excuses I had planned fell apart in an instant.
