Elijah's voice dropped low, almost a whisper. "Is it really impossible to go back to where we were?"
I scoffed, my tone sharp and cutting. "Go back to where we were? What would that even look like? And are you going to dump Jocelyn? Pretend none of this ever happened? And then, what? We just pick up where we left off?"
He stared at me, his gaze steady and unnervingly serious. "Would that work?"
I laughed bitterly, the sound harsh and humorless. "Of course not! I don't love you anymore, Elijah! My love for you was a joke—a mistake. And now, I've finally woken up to reality."
I could feel the heat rising in me, my anger bubbling to the surface. I didn't realize how much it lit me up—how much it made me stand taller and fiercer. But Elijah noticed. His dark eyes grew heavier, clouded with something I didn't want to recognize.
