"I really did come to see you…" Evan stammered, his initial anger giving way to unease. "I've tried coming by a few times, but the nurses wouldn't let me in. I was just worried about you. But…" He trailed off, his voice dropping.
I took a deep breath, looking at his still-youthful face. "Did your brother know you came here?"
He shook his head. A small relief washed over me. There was hope for him yet. He was just too accustomed to defending his brother, even when he didn't understand the full picture.
"Evan," I began softly, "I remember you not liking me very much. Could you tell me why?"
