Chapter 6 Shadows in the Night

The days that followed were anxious as I expected the investigation to turn up any day. Thus, Kai and I entered a completely new phase of our cooperation, characterized by increased concern and a lurking sense of danger. Each time I went out of the house, I had this instinct that somebody was following me. It was as if I constantly had the feeling that somebody was watching me, this was the feeling of danger that was close to us all the time. Kai, as promised, was more forthcoming with me He disclosed that he was an operative of a law enforcement agency and he had been investigating a crime ring involved in money laundering amongst other vice-related crimes. The evidence he had gathered in the course of the investigation was quite incriminating to the extent of toppling influential personalities. However, information again equalized that possibility of risk, this risk being for him and now for me. However, like in all catastrophe movies, there were times that even with the apocalypse on the horizon the world was still relatively sane. Kai and I carried on in the peculiar honeymoon, as we got used to the structure of the television show, making and having dinner together or watching movies at night. It was not a true state of harmony but a merely uneasy, silence that allowed occasional, hurried, and anxious touching. It was during one evening that after eating, we were watching TV seated on the couch when Kai suddenly looked at me and said with a very serious look on his face. “I believe that it is about time you and I spoke, Vanessa. ” I was trying to read a book, but glanced up and felt that slight feeling of nervousness enter my stomach. "What is it?" He considered for a while before drawing a deep breath. “I’ve called for special protection. Unobtrusive and efficient They will be monitoring the building as well as tailing us when we are going out. ” Regardless of this common distaste for a seemingly ‘big brother’ '-'-like setup, I comprehended the need for such vigilance. “Fine. Anything on the rest?” Kai nodded. “I have also been planning to look for another house to rent I feel this house is easily surveilled and we have resided in this house for long; somebody may notice us. ” I frowned, my mind sharply turning to the questions that always plagued me when the issue of moving was brought up; ‘Where would we go?’ ‘’Yes, I have my few safe houses,” Kai said nonchalantly as though he were talking about his few special hiding places. “We could move to one of them at least till we get things sorted out “ The very idea of going to a brand new location that one has never seen before was not to my liking but I understood that Kai was correct. The conditions at present were completely unbearable, and it was better not to remain here; otherwise, the danger would only grow. "Alright," I agreed, nodding. "When do we leave?" “Tomorrow,” Kai stated, there was confidence in his tone. ‘I will organize things. ’ ‘I will sort all that out. ’ The following day as they say was a busy one as they started packing their stuff. Kai remained very specific in terms of what we could carry in the bag and this include leaving behind any item that might be used to locate us. After attaining our objectives, we began to tired or perhaps get hungry, and so decided to leave when the sun had started setting. As usual, Kai made prior preparations; he had hired a car to take by one of his most reliable staff. The last minutes spent in the house were filled with nervous excitement while loading the bags into the car, I felt sad. In many aspects to me and my brother, this apartment small and temporary as it was, had been our home. Leaving it felt like leaving home, in the most real and profound meaning of the word – home was gone, and with it – a part of life as I knew it. I noted that Kai looked at me and gave my hand a reassuring squeeze. “Yes it’s just for a little while,” he said. ”We will return when it is less dangerous. ” I nodded, although I was unable to produce a genuine smile on my lips. “Yes I do, but I don’t know, it is so much to grasp, “ He tilted his head down and whispered with the softest lip caress on my forehead. She nodded but said, “I know. But we will find a way to go around it. Correct, we will do it together. “ Its look became gradually different, and the streets, through which we drove, were changed to more quiet and secluded ones. The safe house Kai had chosen was small and quite inconspicuous to be specific – a cottage located in the woods within the county but not within the city’s limits. Rather, it was the kind of place which appeared quite generic and nondescript – the very traits that could help one go unnoticed. Upon arrival, we offloaded our luggage and got into the house, the atmosphere although charged with anxiety was somewhat familiar. The cottage was not very big but it was rather comfortable: the walls were wooden and the house had a big hearth in the room, where the fire was burning. They were rather contrastive to the shiny, new apartment that we had just left behind to be in this place. Later that evening while their actions suggest, that we stayed close to the fire, Kai opened up, describing more incidences that he encountered before. He described how many years he worked undercover, the risky staking that he made, and the people with whom he was interconnected. This is another side of him that I have not previously come across; focused, passionate, and motivated by his ideals. Though the big boss was satisfied with his report, some issues remained unsolved, and some secrets, that were important to Kai, were hidden. I understood that he was sparing me, he was hiding certain things which are nasty and related to his job. But at the same time, it was almost impossible not to feel annoyed, to demand something more than the selected slices of reality that He wanted to show. But as the night continued, it became more socially appropriate to turn our focus to non blatantly troubling subjects. Yes, we discussed the books we have liked; revealed some memories from childhood; and even could chuckle at some others ridiculous episodes of Kai’s undercover work. Forgetting the presence of the threats was quite possible when one was engaged in mundane tasks such as the above. Rather think that we were simple ordinary people, who could spend a day and even evening together peacefully. But this too was brought back down to earth with a clear and fast knock on the door. Kai frowned fingertips pressing into the table, and stood up. He signaled me to remain in the same position and went to the door and looked through the spy hole. ‘‘It’s Williams,” he said softly. "My assistant. " I sat back a bit, I knew the name but couldn’t place where I knew him from. The death of Williams was more personal because he was one of Kai’s most trusted men, a man Kai has talked about. Minowned for photographing the dead, Kai found himself face to face with a tall, formally dressed man who looked rather serious. “Sorry to bother you,” Williams said, looking at me for a second, then at Kai. ‘But we have a situation. ’ Kai's jaw tightened. "What's happened?" Williams reached into her blouse and handed him a small, black envelope. “This came to the office. It has both of your names on it. “ Kai accepted the envelope and clenched his fist as he tore it open. He took a whole sheet of paper, and for a few seconds, he read to absorb whatever was written on it. When reading, his face became tougher, severe which probably demonstrated his anxiety. I slowly rose from the couch, getting a rush of anxiety in my stomach. "What is it?" ‘Here is the letter,’ He said, his tone serious as he passed the letter to me. ‘It’s a warning,’ Wedge said of the message, ‘from them. ’ I took the paper, and my fingers quivered a little. The message was short and to the point, written in neat, precise handwriting: The message was short and to the point, written in neat, precise handwriting: Convey a message in the television advertisement “We know where you are. The clock is ticking. ” My spine flushed I stepped back hoping to keep her away as she came closer. This was about as implicit a threat as one could make it without actually spelling it out in capital letters; it served to remind us that we were not quite as covert as we would have liked to have been. I raised my eyes to meet Kai’s and my breath hitched. "What do we do?" Kai looked at Williams for a moment before he looked back at me, “We be careful and always assume the worst. ” Williams nodded. ”I will hire more guards here, indeed, we have some leads on who could be behind this; we will follow up”. Kai then agreed with a serious look on his face. ”Good. Let me know. “ Kai looked at me as Williams left and hugged me tight. I put my arms around him and I felt a kind of fear and a kind of recklessness at the same time. Breast cancer raises awareness We were in deeper than I had ever imagined surrounded by enemies we could not see. I still felt a ray of hope as long as we had each other. “Somehow we will,” Kai answered just as determinedly. "I promise. " I nodded, hugging him tightly to me. ‘Together,’ I said aloud and the name seemed heavy on my lips. However, wherever there were problems, we would meet them together, hand in hand. Therefore, at this point, I realized that whatever the outcome would be, I would be able to defend our future, the life that we create. Perhaps the world outside was getting darker, but comforts could be found on the horizon. And that made all the difference They thus embraced the new technologies, learning to use them proficiently and integrating the use of the technologies into their workflows.
