CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY FOUR - Unseen Forces Begin to Move

"Mommy, Daddy, why are you so quiet?" Kayla asked, her big eyes filled with concern. Deonna forced a smile. "Everything's fine, sweetie. Mommy and Daddy just didn't sleep very well last night." Logan knelt down to Kayla's level. "But that doesn't change how much we love you, princess. Have a great day at daycare, okay?" As they watched Kayla skip off to join her friends, Logan turned to Deonna. "We need to fix this, Deonna. I hate that we're like this." Deonna nodded, her throat tight. "I know. But Logan, something needs to change. We can't go on like this." Before Logan could respond, Deonna's phone buzzed with a message from her assistant. "I have to go. There's an emergency meeting with the strategy team." Logan reached out, catching her hand. "We'll talk tonight, okay? Really talk. I promise." Deonna squeezed his hand briefly before pulling away. "Okay. Tonight." As she walked into Maine Enterprises, Deonna steeled herself for another day of navigating the minefield that Em
