CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY EIGHT – THE LOOMING DEBT
The dim light of Logan's office cast long shadows across the room as he sat hunched over his laptop, his brow furrowed in concentration. The clock on the wall ticked past midnight, but sleep was the furthest thing from his mind. His eyes darted back and forth, scanning the words on the screen for what felt like the hundredth time.
"This can't be real," he muttered, running a hand through his disheveled hair.
The email had arrived hours ago, its contents burning into his retinas:
"Mr. Maine,
Your father's past has caught up with him. The debt must be paid. You have one week."
No signature. No explanation. Just a vague threat and an impossible deadline.
Logan's finger hovered over the delete button, tempted to erase the message and pretend it never existed. But something held him back. A nagging feeling in the pit of his stomach told him this wasn't just some elaborate prank.
