Nell assessed the situation and thought that she was safe, for now. However, she had no idea what was happening on Nancy’s side. She was a little worried that something might have happened to Nancy. The woman stopped in her tracks and stared at her for a moment. She saw the desperation in Nell’s face, so she said, “All right, then we’ll go to Fred’s place tomorrow to take a look. I’ll bring the girl over if it’s convenient.” Nell immediately added, “Why don’t we go with them?” The smile on the woman’s face dropped slightly. With a halfhearted smile, she said, “Lady, what are you worrying about? We saved you and your friend, and we’re not hurting you. It’s just two nights. Are you scared that we’re gonna eat your friend?” The drastic shift in her attitude startled Nell. She did not know what had ticked her off. Nevertheless, she was living in her house right now, so she could not come off too strong. In fact, it was in her best interest if she said as little as possible.
